WOTC adds more options for decreasing the Avatar project and does make managing the meter almost trivial. Open the file called 'DefaultGameData.ini', and hit CTRL F. The directory should be something like: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\XCOM 2\XComGame\Config. First, navigate to your XCOM 2 steam folder (not the one located in My Games). This problem disappears as you expand throughout the world. Changing the length of the Avatar Project bar. Attacking Alien facilities will be your primary way to reduce Avatar progress, so be sure to acquire the resistance connections that make. If you haven't reduced any Avatar progress by that time, the game ends in a loss. The problem is that, if you don't expand aggressively during the early game, you can find yourself in a situation where it will take more time to expand into a territory with an Advent facility than you have left to knock down the meter. Once all 12 pips are filled, a timer starts (based on the next time Advent would generate a pip of progress 20 days). If you fail to reduce the meter after that grace period, it's game over. Nothing will happen to you in-game until the meter fills all the way up and the game gives you an additional window of time to reduce the meter below full (that amount of time might be based on the difficulty level, I'm not sure). At the start of the game, the facilities likely will be located many territories away from your starting position. Assuming that we're talking about the base game and not WOTC, there are two ways to decrease the Avatar meter - by completing certain story missions and by blowing up Advent facilities.
